We have all heard of the well-worn saying that something is ‘the spice of life’. Any dictionary’s meaning of ‘spice’ gives us a good idea of how the addition of spice to a meal actually achieves ‘aroma’, ‘color’, ‘fragrance’ ‘piquancy’ and a little ‘excitement’.

Hundreds of spices, such as
Herbies Spices, are available online and gourmet stores throughout Australia. Although we think of spices and herbs in the same context, there is a slight difference. Herbs are generally classified as dried and fresh leaves of plants that add flavor, aroma or color. The spices are made from the flowers, seeds, roots, or any other part of a plant. Two plants, however, are both classified as herbs and spices; these are dill and coriander.

Almost every kitchen has a place for its spices or herbs. And, every cook would be lost without the aromatic flavors that enhance their recipes. What would Spaghetti Bolognaise be without a touch of oregano or basil? A pancake with a spoonful of ice cream would be nothing without a dash of cinnamon. A sprinkling of parsley leaves over a salad or cold fare adds a decorative finish to any serving dish.

Newcomers to herbs and spices should begin by experimenting with those that are well-known. Some popular spices are cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and paprika. Incidentally, many spices are famous for their therapeutic qualities, which is an additional bonus. For instance, anyone who suffers from indigestion could try some ginger tea for relief. This is made by adding a small teaspoon of ginger to boiling water. Herbalists also recommend ginger to help relieve headaches, heartburn and stomach cramps, as well as many other ailments. It should be sipped slowly throughout the day. However, always check with your doctor first in case it interferes with any prescribed medicines. In fact, a doctor’s advice should be sought when any herbal remedies are taken with prescription drugs.

Many Australians tend to use ginger for baking items such as ginger biscuits, ginger cake, and of course, gingerbread men. It is also added to salads and dishes where carrots are the main ingredient. However, Indian cookery incorporates generous amounts of ginger in savory dishes.

For those watching their weight the good news is that
herbs and spices contain minimal calories/kilojoules. For instance, a tablespoon of cinnamon adds only 6 calories/26 kilojoules to a dish. Also, cinnamon’s anti-bacterial properties are alleged to help relieve yeast infections and to help protect against heart attacks.

Herbs can be bought in small quantities at supermarkets and online websites. Bear in mind that fresh herbs don’t last very long, even if left in a fridge. It is often more economical to purchase dried herbs. Popular herbs to try are basil, parsley, sage, mint and thyme. These can be added to hundreds of main course meals. Very soon, you will realize that herbs, as well as spices, have become a part of your cooking lifestyle.
